Eddie Hearn, the CEO of Matchroom Boxing, and Oscar De La Hoya, the CEO of Golden Boy Promotions, have been at odds for some time, though it appears to be all in good fun to a degree.
The pair exchanged words over the internet via Twitter as the two jabbed back and forth.
De La Hoya used a hashtag of #lonesomeEddie to mock Hearn as Canelo Álvarez, who Hearn has been heavily tied to over the past few years seems to be heading over to the Premier Boxing Champions for a three-fight deal. The alleged joke seemed to mock Hearn, who has built up his boxing empire on Anthony Joshua, Katie Taylor, and in recent years, Canelo Álvarez. Losing a promotional deal with Canelo Álvarez would appear to some, a major blow to Eddie Hearn. Especially since Taylor and Joshua seem to be closing in on the end of their careers.
This is not the first time the pair have had words for each other, as De La Hoya has in numerous interviews criticized the way Hearn has promoted Canelo Álvarez. Now after the most recent fight Hearn called for a fight between Edgar Berlanga, a big punching super middleweight and Jaime Munguia, a fighter Oscar De La Hoya co-promotes with Zanfer.
De La Hoya furthered the taunts.
“#lonesomeEddie promised @EdgarBerlangaJr Canelo and now he can’t deliver, like when he signed Mikey Garcia and couldn’t deliver,” tweeted De La Hoya. “No wonder BOB and AL will not work with him…#lonesomeEddie you couldn’t deliver @EdgarBerlangaJr to Canelo and now [you're] throwing Munguías name? Good luck [SIC].”
Hearn responded to De La Hoya’s rhetoric in a calculated manner sending out his most notable tweet with the following.
“I think [Berlanga vs. Munguia is] a great fight for the fans but I’ll speak to your bosses at @DAZNBoxing and we will come back to you," tweeted Hearn. "Do you remember when you flew into NYC begging to sign Berlanga?"
Hearn concluded with the following.
“For a true great like Oscar to be so obsessed with me,” tweeted Hearn. “honestly it’s unbelievably flattering.”
As ProBox TV News reported prior, Hearn had complimented the idea of Canelo Álvarez going to the PBC. Yet, it appears that Hearn and De La Hoya will take not-so-subtle jabs at one another over the next few months especially since they occupy the same network, DAZN. Given they share a network, one would think co-promotion would be easy - and it should be, but it might also be very public.
Last night De La Hoya continued his recent Twitter storm as he hinted at rumors around a possible David Benavidez versus Jaime Munguia fight.
"Awesome news @jaimemunguia15 is very interested in fighting @Benavidez300. Looking forward to starting discussions in what could possibly be fight of the year!"
The hope is in the end - all this talking leads to some great fights.
